Casey House is seeking a Chief Development Officer to develop, manage and lead through a team of six staff in all fundraising and marketing strategies and activities. This includes oversight of all fundraising programs, including major gifts, annual campaigns, planned giving, corporate sponsorship and special events, as well as oversight of communications, marketing, and community relations.
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and serving as a member of the Casey House senior leadership team, the Chief Development Officer will also work closely with the Casey House Board of Directors, and the Board’s fundraising committee, to ensure that Casey House’s fundraising goals and ambitions are achieved.

Casey House is a sub-acute specialty hospital in Toronto. Since the day the doors opened in 1988, it’s been clear: Casey House is different. It’s Canada’s first and only stand-alone hospital for people with HIV/AIDS with a multi-disciplinary approach to health and well-being, but it’s the way they treat clients that sets them apart.
Casey House believes clients deserve to be cared for and treated with dignity, and that their humanity should be more visible than their disease.
It’s what they’ve done from the beginning. In fact, the first patient was delivered to the door by a team of medics wearing hazmat suits. He was greeted by Casey House with a warm embrace. It was the first time he’d been touched in months.
Casey House is passionate about breaking down barriers and removing stigmas, and takes a holistic approach to care, which means they listen to clients, understand their situations and help without judgement.

In 2017, Casey House built compassion a new home with a 58,000 square foot purpose-built facility designed to deliver an enhanced model of care that puts clients first. A place where holistic care is provided in a non-judgmental, stigma-free setting to help achieve stability in clients’ health and lives. Situated on Jarvis Street in downtown Toronto, Casey House ensures those who live with HIV/AIDS are not forgotten or overlooked.
As a relatively new disease, HIV/AIDS continues to change in the way it affects individuals as well as the groups of people affected. We have witnessed a dramatic evolution in the face of HIV/AIDS in the past two decades, with medications to manage health and an increase in infection rates in women, youth, Indigenous people, people from countries where HIV is endemic, and people who are homeless, or precariously housed. Long-term survivors are aging and being confronted with complex and concurrent health issues.
To meet the needs of clients, Casey House proudly collaborates and affiliates with organizations and agencies in the community to provide the very best in HIV/AIDS care. They listen to their clients, understand their situations and help without judgement.
Casey House believes in care that addresses not only an individual’s medical concerns, but multiple aspects of who they are and what they are experiencing. The clinical team is inter-disciplinary and collaborates to provide compassionate, supportive care that is client-centered, holistic and culturally sensitive.

FUNDRAISING AT CASEY HOUSE
There is no cost to clients for Casey House’s services. As with other hospitals, basic operating costs are funded by Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
However, Casey House relies heavily on the generous donations of supporters for capital projects and to enhance health care programs including: inpatient and day health programs, community care and outreach program, as well as education and research. We raise $3.5 million annually, including over $1 million from our events. As well, the Rebuilding Lives capital campaign raised over $10 million.
Support from donors enables Casey House to continue to deliver holistic HIV/AIDS care in a compassionate and non-judgmental way to those who need it. They are also grateful to the 300+ volunteers who engage in many meaningful ways. Each year, more than 100 volunteers provide vital services, programs and support to clients, and many more assist with fundraising activities and events. In 2020, Casey House was proud to be named as one of Maclean’s top 10 Canadian health charities.
Individual donors support Casey House through a variety of fundraising programs including major gifts, one-time gifts and monthly annual donations, event participation, gifts of securities, and legacy gifts. The Friends InDeed Legacy Society honours and recognizes donors who have made a long-term commitment to Casey House’s mission through planned gifts.
Many of Canada’s leading corporations also support Casey House. These corporate partners sponsor fundraising events and engage in philanthropic giving to support services. Casey House also helps corporations provide volunteer opportunities to their employees. These generous corporations help support and empower the vulnerable people of the community living with HIV/AIDS, advocate on their behalf, provide them with compassionate, progressive and effective care, and make their humanity more visible than their disease.
The Casey House Foundation exists exclusively to raise funds for the hospital. The Foundation is a separate legal entity, and we manage it as such. We have one CEO and one Board Chair for both organizations, but we operate all meetings, reporting, policies and processes separately from one another. The Chief Development Officer and other Foundation team members are employed by the Foundation corporation. That said, we function collaboratively under a ‘one Casey House’ philosophy, with employees of the two organizations working closely and symbiotically.
A proven fundraiser with significant progressive generalist fundraising experience, the ideal candidate will bring demonstrated success in major gift engagement with individuals, family and corporate foundations, and corporate partners. The Chief Development Officer will utilize their skills and experiences to develop and implement revenue generation plans to ensure Casey House’s short- and long-term success. Comfortable initiating relationships and leading solicitations, the new incumbent will integrate revenue streams and lead the shift to a greater focus on individual major and planned giving.
Focused, organized, and self-motivated, the successful candidate will be a strong strategic thinker who utilizes data-driven learning and decision making to assess opportunities and plan the work. Candidates must bring an understanding of the not-for-profit environment including policies, programs and issues affecting the sector, as well as knowledge of philanthropic processes, legislation, and best practices.
Confident, authentic, and engaging, the successful candidate will bring demonstrated ability in public speaking. Experience in marketing communications would also be beneficial in this role, as the team works to raise awareness of Casey House and the hospital’s positive impacts.
Interested in building the capacity of the team, the ideal candidate will have both the interest and aptitude to mentor and coach, to inspire and lead, and to manage change. Comfortable working in a small shop, the Chief Development Officer will shift seamlessly between directing and doing, and will enjoy the nimbleness that Casey House’s environment provides.
As a member of Casey House’s senior leadership team, candidates must bring an appreciation of, commitment to and passion for the hospital’s vision, purpose, values and commitments. Kind, compassionate, and caring, the successful candidate will bring a deep understanding of social justice, and strong commitment to inclusivity and equity.
Personal maturity, optimism and a sense of humour are essential in this role. The ideal candidate will bring a high level of emotional intelligence, and a capacity for self reflection and critical thinking. As such, the new incumbent will have the temerity to speak in areas that are not their expertise, and the wisdom to listen to others who bring different perspectives that affect the CDO’s area of responsibility.
The successful candidate will have previous experience working with a diverse group of staff, volunteers, donors, community members, stakeholders and the general public. This includes working with senior-level volunteers on a Board of Directors and Fundraising Committee, all while fostering effective partnerships inside Casey House and across AIDS service organizations (ASO’s) and the broader health care field.
Friendly and grounded, the Chief Development Officer will be an ambassador for philanthropy within Casey House, willingly and proactively interacting with clinical and support staff, as the organization comes together to deliver excellent health care. The successful candidate will also be comfortable engaging with clients, and engaging clients in philanthropy work, and will respect the safe space that is provided for them at Casey House.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Chief Development Officer is responsible for the general administration, organization and management of Casey House Foundation and its fundraising and marketing activities, and the team of staff who implement these programs. The CDO will work with the senior leadership team to support the strategic priorities of the organization, working closely with other Casey House leaders, with the fundraising committee of the Board and with the Board of Directors directly to advance Casey House’s mission and to increase awareness of, community engagement with, and financial support for the organization.
The Chief Development Officer is also responsible for a leading a portfolio of major donors and partners, working in partnership with colleagues and volunteers as appropriate to proactively cultivate, solicit and steward gifts to Casey House.
Specifically, the Chief Development Officer envisions, directs, manages and implements:
An engagement strategy to steward current donors and partners
Strategies and tactics to identify, qualify, and engage new individual and foundation prospective donors, and new prospective corporate partners
A fundraising program that includes all revenue generation activities related to annual giving, major gifts, legacy giving, and special events
A comprehensive program of marketing and communications for Casey House
Develop, motivate and manage the fundraising and marketing communications staff, ensuring a high performance team while inspiring a positive and inclusive work environment
Nurture and facilitate the professional growth of the fundraising and marketing communications team through regular interactions, feedback, and dialogue
Recommend and implement appropriate ongoing training and professional development to facilitate individual improvement and knowledge
Conduct and contribute to performance evaluations and ongoing assessment of fundraising and marketing communications staff
Lead, encourage, and contribute to an enthusiastic culture of philanthropy within Casey House
Provide support to initiatives led by the CEO and the Board
Oversee the strategic direction and tactical implementation of all fundraising programs, leading or delegating to team members as needed and as appropriate

Personally lead, manage, and proactively engage a portfolio of donors and prospects, serving as the lead fundraiser for Casey House
Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individuals, Foundation, and corporations
Prepare fundraising strategies, reports and forecasts for the CEO and Board of Directors
Multiyear strategies, annual operational plans, regular reporting on prospect pipeline health and progress, year to date fundraising progress, cash flow analysis
Analyze all fundraising results and develop benchmarks and targets in line with industry standards
Prepare and track budgets
Develop and institute appropriate policies and procedures related to fundraising
Including prospect research, gift acceptance, naming, donor relations, and ethics
Provide support, guidance, training, encouragement, and assistance to fundraising volunteers, to the CEO, and to any staff of Casey House who are involved in fundraising
Ensure that Casey House is establishing and maintaining respectful and productive relationships with all supporting volunteers
Marketing & Communications
Lead the creation of an operational plan for marketing & communications, working in collaboration with the CEO and the marketing communications team
Oversee the implementation of the marketing & communications plan, ensuring activities are designed to maintain and enhance the positive reputation of Casey House, and to encourage positive relations and effective communications with donors, community partners, elected officials and friends of Casey House
Operational Planning & Management
Develop, implement and oversee an annual operational plan for Fundraising and Marketing
Establish an annual operations plan including goals and objectives, targets and expenses
Develop a statement of fundraising priorities, in alignment with Casey House’s strategic priorities
Develop and manage, in cooperation with CFO and the CEO, the budgets for the Fundraising and Marketing departments
Ensure that appropriate systems, processes, and protocols are in place for donor, prospective, and relationship management record keeping in Raiser’s Edge
