TELUS Spark Science Centre (Spark), a registered educational charity, exists to entertain and inspire people of all ages through creative encounters with science, engineering, technology, math and art. Spark exists to lift people up with the power of curiosity through creative encounters with science!

Calgary’s science centre is a pioneer in science entertainment and programming, with roots dating back to 1967. Home to one of Western Canada’s largest dome theatre, the Digital Immersion Gallery, VR experiences, and innovative spaces like Steven’s Lab, where interactive experiments unfold before your eyes. From the robot-dog Flint to Canada’s first robot-coa5ter, R05iE, and a 15-acre park surrounding the science of the developing brain, Spark is a hub for creative encounters.

Position Overview

The Coordinator, Development reports directly to the Director, Advancement.  The Coordinator, Development works closely with the Director, Advancement to support the strategic direction of the Advancement team specifically in Community engagement and advancement services.  This includes managing the NXT fundraising database, ensuring donor files are maintained, acknowledging and receipting donor gifts, processing donor communication and assisting in the coordination of donor and sponsorship events.  The coordinator will also manage the Community Access program, which includes Community Connections, Learning Connections and Camperships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate and up to date data for the advancement team outreach activities in the NXT database.
  • Data management and administration including but not limited to database updates, data analysis, gift processing, tax receipts, compiling fulfillment report data, and donor relations support.
  • Assist with donor communication, prospect research, briefing notes, board reports the prospect pipeline and development dashboards and contact reports for prospective donors/sponsors.
  • Manage gift fulfillment obligations made to sponsors and donors.  This includes distribution of tickets, logo recognition and pledge payments.
  • Responsible for managing the Community Access Program.  This includes partnerships with not-for-profit organizations, social agencies and school boards; managing summer camperships, Fair Entry, Access 2 and new Canadian programs.
  • Organization of annual Family Science Night and other events as required.
  • Maintain ongoing communications with our community partners, providing updates on “What’s Happening at TELUS Spark Science Centre”.
  • Coordinate Community Connections applications, vetting of applications and review committee, management of lending cards and organizing annual orientation for all community partners.
  • Ongoing communication with Call Centre to coordinate all Learning Connections bookings and assist with communications with the schools and Board of Education partners.
  • Work closely with other members of the Advancement team to provide statistics, testimonials for sponsor fulfillment and/ or other funding proposals.
  • Maintain up to date records in our awards program. Drafting of award nominations. Coordinate annual White Hat Award nominations. Work closely with all Spark departments to identify opportunities and nominees for awards that will enhance the reputation of our organization.
  • Support research and activities related to our Board Alumni program.
  • Ensure personal and team activities are aligned with business and strategic goals of Spark as a whole.
  • Model high performance, flexibility and kindness in a rapidly changing growth environment.
  • Other duties as required and assigned.

Qualifications & Knowledge:

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience or expertise in a fundraising environment with specific experience with database management and community engagement.
  • A solid understanding of database management, non-profit organizations and community engagement.
  • Fluency in Raiser’s Edge NXT Fundraising Software and able to use most Microsoft platforms.
  • Excellent organizational/multi-tasking skills.
  • Strong ethics and ability to manage confidential data.
  • Knowledge and understanding of CRA regulations for charities, around tax receipting, and data collection for major and planned gifts is an asset.
  • Ability to compile well written Development materials such as sponsorship fulfillment reports and donor thank you letters.
  • Effective prioritization, multi-tasking, and time management skills to meet multiple deadlines
  • Professional manner with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to positively deal with donors, sponsors, and the public on the phone, email and in person to reinforce their relationship with Spark.
  • A positive attitude!
