The Mentorship Relationship
16 January 2025 @ 11:30 am – 1:30 pm MST
January is Mentorship Month!
No better time than this to launch AFP Calgary & Area Chapter’s Mentorship program.
Fostering Connections and Building Professional Networks
AFP Calgary & Area brings together professionals with collective knowledge and experience in all areas of fund development. This creates a perfect environment for collaboration and, ultimately, where mentorship relationships offer opportunities to flourish. Through our Mentorship Program, senior professionals with varied experience levels or subject matter expertise will work together with each mentee to achieve common goals. This collaboration can create relationships that contribute positively to your career, your future development and the organization you serve.
We’ve invited Kara Exner, M.C. Ed, PCC, to kick things off with this Lunch and Learn session designed to help you, both Mentor and Mentee in building the best relationship possible.
Kara Exner has been a Professional Coach since 2005. She has worked with clients across diverse industries, with a particular affinity for the non-profit and public sectors: working with those who are making a difference for causes they care about. She has provided leadership coaching for fund development professionals and has been a team facilitator and presenter for fundraiser groups on topics such as powerful listening skills, personal strengths development, and thinking like a changemaker.
Kara is a graduate of the Co-Active Coach Training Program, has earned the credential of Professional Certified Coach (PCC) from the International Coaching Federation, and has a Master’s degree in Adult & Continuing Education and a B.A. in Psychology. She is a long-time volunteer global leader with the International Coaching Federation (ICF), currently serving as Director on the ICF Global Enterprise Board, and she serves as a mentor coach for new professional coaches in training. Kara is the author of Be the Change(maker): Lessons from Those Who Are & A Catalyst for Those Who Will.
Not all mentorship arrangements are created equal. Sometimes both mentors and mentees report feeling disappointed after the engagement has concluded, and that their mentoring conversations fell short. Often mentorship programs leave the initiative to the mentee to make it what they need it to be, but it can be challenging to know where to start. This session will cover what a mentee needs to know and do to create an effective mentorship relationship and get the most from their mentee opportunities. Tips for mentors will also be provided – to help them be supportive of mentees’ goals and create meaningful engagements for both parties.
