The Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Centre (“the DI”) is a low-barrier, housing-focused shelter that serves some of the city’s most vulnerable people. At the DI, we focus on providing a person’s basic needs, while doing everything possible to find them a permanent, safe home that meets their individual needs. Position Summary
Reporting to the Senior Director, Strategy, Impact & Engagement, the Director, Fund Development & Community Engagement leads the Campaign, Major Gifts, Grants, Legacy Giving, Annual Giving and Leadership Giving portfolios; Stewardship and Donor Relations; and Volunteer and Community Programs for the Calgary Drop-In Centre. In this role, the incumbent is committed to the vision, mission, values and strategic priorities of the Development & Engagement team and the DI. The Director is supported by and responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the Fundraising and Community Engagement team. The Director will possess the ability to work with a high degree of independence and multi-tasking while maintaining a strategic perspective on the activities and planning of the team. Together, with the Senior Director, Strategy, Impact & Engagement, the Director develops strategies for the department and ensures successful achievement of annual goals and targets. Ongoing evaluation for continuous improvement and demonstrated impact are keys to success.
You are a professional experienced fundraiser/relationship manager with solid project management and demonstrated success. You are passionate about helping Calgarians who are experiencing homelessness, marginalization, or extreme poverty. You are results oriented and have a positive outlook and a get-things-done attitude. You develop effective working relationships, can work flexibly across professional and operational boundaries, and can communicate professionally with internal and external stakeholders at all levels. You support internal and external collaborative capacity building and emergent frameworks, methods and tools for greater revenue generation and community impact. Sound judgment, problem solving skills, diplomacy, an eye for detail and commitment to meeting deadlines are important personal attributes for this position.
Time Commitment
Not less than 37.5 hours per week. Some unusual hours may be required from time to time as the need arises. These hours may be altered at the discretion of management.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
This position initiates, manages, and assures implementation of strategies for the department. Duties include:
Leadership and Team Management
- In consultation with the Senior Director, recruits, interviews, and selects well-qualified fund development and community engagement staff.
- Manages, mentors, and coaches a team of four staff who support agency volunteers, stakeholder engagement, special events and all revenue generating programs ensuring they have clear direction, oversight, ongoing performance management and evaluation, opportunities for professional growth and development, all while removing barriers to success.
- Engages and/or consults with appropriate internal and/or external resources to optimize the success of all programs in the Development & Engagement portfolio.
- Capitalizes on opportunities to build meaningful relationships, both internally and externally.
- Self-motivated and flexible, manages and prioritizes multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment of frequent change and within an ambiguous landscape.
- Defines expectations for self and others and acts to fulfill these expectations. Self-reflects, monitors, and corrects one’s own actions.
Fund Development
- Responsible for building a sustainable major gift and stakeholder engagement program through the identification, development and implementation of capital, annual, and multi-year plans.
- Responsible for generating fundraising revenue to achieve annual and project targets through philanthropic gifts, sponsorships, planned gifts, bequests, gifts-in-kind and special events management, including through a personal pipeline of major gift and legacy donor prospects over $50,000.
- Provides leadership, strategic management, expertise, counsel, and co-ordination on all revenue generating, volunteer, and community programs.
- Determines agency needs/requirements into opportunities for stakeholder support for Community Engagement & Development to pursue.
- Manages the development and implementation of new opportunities, including the application for funding, establishment of key deliverables, preparation of project work plans and the development of project structures with the support of the DI leadership team.
- In collaboration with the Senior Director, Strategy, Impact & Engagement and the Director, Strategic Communications, develops and implements an effective communications strategy to broaden and diversify the DI’s donor base, further promote meaningful opportunities for donor/volunteer/community engagement, access to programs, and secure philanthropic support.
- Develops and leads an appropriate donor recognition and stewardship program.
- Manages projects from inception to completion and ensures deliverables on target outcomes.
- Ensures accurate and effective donor and prospect records management.
- Monitors trends in the community and region to adapt donor engagement strategies.
- Fosters a culture of philanthropy throughout the Drop-In Centre, so that everyone recognizes the importance of stewarding positive relationships and problem-solving for the best possible, mutually beneficial outcomes.
Volunteer/Community Engagement
- Responsible for executing strategy for volunteer and community engagement, including programs such as: Practicum and 3rd party fundraising initiatives.
- Informs the DI’s social media strategy.
- Oversees the DI’s internal fundraising events and volunteer appreciation events.
- Accountable for the volunteer management database, ensuring effective volunteer and community partner records management.
- Builds, implements, and maintains related processes and policy as required.
Administration
- Develops and gains approval for detailed annual income and expenditure budgets.
- Supports the development and distribution of regular progress reports.
- Monitors expenses and analyzes budget reports and recommend changes as necessary.
Required Competencies and Qualifications
- Minimum of 7 years of directly-related fundraising experience and a proven record of success in a non-profit setting required.
- Experience with building and managing a portfolio of Major Gift donors of $50,000 to $1M.
- Proven skills and experience managing stakeholder relationships.
- Awareness of Federal and provincial legislation affecting charities
- Special events planning and management.
- Post-secondary education or diploma in a related field
- Project management and community programs experience strongly encouraged.
- Self-directed and action oriented
- Proficient in Raiser’s Edge
- Knowledge of Donor Bill of Rights and Fundraising Code of Ethics required.
- Energetic and self-directed, with effective time management and organizational skills including the ability to deal with multiple priorities at the same time.
- Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written
- Proficient in Office365 and Microsoft Office Suite
- Eager to learn new systems and adopt improved best practices.

Working Conditions
Front-line staff are exposed to emotionally disturbing events, such as: medical distress, threatened/actual serious injury, violence, abuse, and death; where clients may be experiencing fear, terror, hopelessness, rage, self-harm and conflict. It is understood and accepted that you will be working in distress and/or high-stress situations, which may include emergency response where resiliency and stress tolerance and the ability to maintain composure, remain calm and focused is imperative. Exposure to bodily fluids may also occur.
