The Children’s Cottage Society, established in Calgary in 1986, provides crisis nursery, community respite, and family support programs to more than 3,500 children a year. The Society’s mission is to “Build strong children and safe, nurturing families through prevention programs and support services” and our vision is “Resilient children blossom in healthy families.”
The Director of Development provides leadership in the areas of fundraising and communications and in participates as a strategic thought leader for the Society. The Director of Development leads a 4-person team and is responsible for creating and implementing a strategic approach to the Society’s fund development, marketing and communications aimed at supporting the Society’s annual fundraising needs, capital funds when needed, and government relations as it pertains to our integrated agency strategic plan.
This position is Full Time (40 hours per week).
The primary work location for this position will be 1804 Home Road NW, Calgary, but involves regular travel to the agency’s other sites and off-site meetings in the community
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post-secondary education in a relevant area.
- Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in fundraising with a track record of success.
- A strong knowledge base in communications strategies and current platforms.
- Either eligible for, or has obtained, a CFRE designation.
- This position requires the use of a personal vehicle.
SKILLS:
- Experienced in conducting operational campaigns, pursuing capital campaign major gifts, and donor stewardship.
- Ability to uphold confidentiality around personal data, organizational materials, and proprietary information, and promote ethical practice.
- Knowledgeable about the Calgary philanthropic environment.
- Demonstrated experience in producing fundraising materials.
- Demonstrated knowledge of public and media relations.
- Knowledge of fundraising software (experience with Raiser’s Edge is an asset).
- Skilled in staff leadership and management of staff.
- Experience working with a Board and a Campaign Committee
- Superior verbal and written communications skills.
- Knowledge of social media climate and platforms.
- Experience in developing and managing budgets.
- Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation affecting charities.
- Skilled in government relations
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Annual Campaign Responsibilities
- Support the fund development department to implement and manage a $1.8 million annual program fundraising budget and an annual capital fundraising budget.
- Manage and research donor prospect lists, prepare materials and provide support to staff, board members, and volunteers for solicitations.
- Ensure there is a strategy for grant applications. Participate in grant writing as required.
- Ensure that the Society has an effective annual signature event.
- Ensure that individual, corporate, foundation, and club and group campaigns are planned and executed.
- Track and report on fundraising and communications goals monthly to the CEO and Executive Team, and quarterly to the Board of Directors.
- Oversee tracking and acknowledgement processes of all fundraising gifts.
- Ensures that there is a communications strategy and work plan for all Children’s Cottage programs, fundraising and agency communications requirements.
- Oversee implementation of the communications strategy and work plan, including internal and external newsletters.
- Work with the CEO and a communications consultant to create an agency annual report.
- Be adept at public speaking and at engaging the interest and support of donors and volunteers in the Society and in its fundraising and communications activities.
- Acts a spokesperson for the Society as required at events and media opportunities.
Capital Campaign Responsibilities
- Raise remaining capital campaign goals, $6 million.
- With the support of the CEO and the Communications manage and meet deadlines regarding the writing and development of capital campaign print and electronic materials and will ensure that the design and production is coordinated.
- Oversee the development of and execution of campaign communications.
- Organize and implement cultivation, fundraising, and recognition events.
- Manage and support campaign volunteers and organize all campaign meetings.
- Manage and report on the capital campaign fundraising budget.
Physical and Environmental Demands
- Be mobile by moving oneself from place to place quickly and easily, including walking and climbing stairs
- Be able to stand for long periods of time
- Ability to sit at a desk and use a computer for long periods of time
- Repetitive motions with the wrists, hands, and fingers
- Drive to various locations in varying weather conditions
- Ability to lift and carry materials up to 25 pounds in weight
- Must be able to stand, squat, walk, kneel, bend, grasp, climb, push and pull.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
- A Police Information Check at commencement and every three years, which includes a vulnerable sector search, is a requirement to maintain employment
- A Child Intervention Record Check at commencement and every three years, which includes a vulnerable sector search, is a requirement to maintain employment
- Proof of Education (original Documents) required as part of commencement.
