This is a permanent, full-time position reporting to the Director of Philanthropy. This position requires working in the office. This is not a remote working position.

The Position

The Development Associate – Annual & Legacy Giving is a full-time position focused on Kids Cancer Care’s digital and direct response campaigns, monthly giving portfolio and legacy giving portfolio. This position will be assigned additional areas of leadership or support based on appropriate workloads and timing.

The Development Associate – Annual & Legacy Giving must be both task- and project-driven with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities, timelines, and projects. The candidate must be comfortable taking initiative and problem-solving in relation to the specific tasks outlined below.

Key Areas of Responsibility

The Development Associate – Annual & Legacy Giving will set goals for growth to realize both the maintenance of existing donors through excellent stewardship and growth of new donors through creative marketing and networking.

Direct Response (direct mail, newsletter)

  • Develop annual solicitation calendar and creative strategy including, but not limited to, the integrated direct response strategy around Giving Tuesday, year-end giving campaign, email solicitation, social media, list management and tracking;
  • Manage direct mail campaigns, including writing engaging and inspirational donor-centric solicitation letters;
  • Lead the planning and implementation of specialized mailings in direct mail;
  • Lead the segmentation strategy in partnership with the Database Specialist and Director of Philanthropy;
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Communications to develop multi-channel social and email solicitation strategies to support each direct mail campaign;
  • Administer vendor relationships which may include contracts with mailing houses, printers, graphic designers, and Canada Post;
  • Ensure donor information and actions are accurately maintained and recorded in the Raiser’s Edge fundraising database ensuring integrity of donor data;
  • Monitor changes in giving frequency and/or giving levels resulting from each solicitation effort; and
  • Set annual targets to realize year-over-year increases (with associated annual budgets) to support overall revenue growth strategy.

Monthly Donors

  • Maintain and grow a robust monthly giving program (in partnership with the Director of Philanthropy who manages the monthly donors considered major donors);
  • Achieve revenue targets through a combination of approaches: direct mail, email, social media or face-to-face;
  • Segment monthly donors into appropriate pools for annual gift increases or special one-time gifts;
  • Ensure donor information and actions are accurately maintained and recorded in the Raiser’s Edge fundraising database ensuring integrity of donor data; and
  • Set annual targets to realize year-over-year increases (with associated annual budgets) to support overall revenue growth strategy.

Legacy Giving

  • Work toward developing a robust, sustainable multi-channel program that includes one-to-one calling, direct mail campaigns, e-marketing, and any partnerships similar to that with The Canadian Free Wills Network;
  • Develop content to support each channel of activity with clear and compelling cases for support;
  • Act as a central point of contact for internal and external stakeholders on matters relating to the Legacy Giving portfolio;
  • Ensure ease of legacy gift transfers;
  • Maintain open communications with the CEO, Director of Philanthropy, Database Specialist, and the Gift Processing team to flag potential legacy donors;
  • Develop customized strategies and plans to identify, cultivate, engage, solicit, and steward legacy donors and prospects within and outside of the Foundation;
  • Ensure legal compliance and fundraising best practices for administration, areas of ethical due diligence, data protection and privacy;
  • Manage the legacy component of the Raiser’s Edge database, ensuring that it is properly structured and updated for the management and cultivation of donors (best practices);
  • Ensure donor information and actions are accurately maintained and recorded in the Raiser’s Edge fundraising database ensuring integrity of donor data;
  • Maintain legacy/estate donor information files (electronic and hard copy) in the SharePoint file management and Raiser’s Edge database system (Raiser’s Edge); and
  • Be accountable and responsible for the development and delivery of an effective legacy giving operational budget by providing monthly Expense and Bequest Revenue Reports.

Database Management

  • Manage entry of stewardship actions into Raiser’s Edge database; and
  • Support Database Specialist in data needs related to annual or planned giving.

Stewardship Oversight

  • Update and maintain the Kids Cancer Care stewardship grid with respect to annual and planned giving activities, and encourage awareness of required activities across the Development team; and
  • Ensure donors receive the right number of touchpoints during the year which may include awareness of mass communication activities.

General Duties as a member of the Revenue Development team

  • Support team members to complete projects, working as a team first and foremost;
  • Update donor information in Raiser’s Edge NXT in accordance with established standards for Raiser’s Edge NXT usage;
  • Work closely with staff and volunteers to establish vision and methods to achieve and exceed the goals of each program;
  • Create and adhere to appropriate timelines and ensure that necessary resources are in place;
  • Participate in the establishment of both long-term and short-term (annual) planning for the Revenue Development area;
  • Represent Kids Cancer Care in the community by 1) being knowledgeable about the cause, and 2) developing and maintaining supportive relationships;
  • Bring creativity and enthusiasm to the workplace; and
  • Ensure that Kids Cancer Care fundraising activities and events are of the highest standard by adhering to all charitable and ethical guidelines.

Education, Certifications and Proficiencies

  • At least two years of relevant experience in annual giving fundraising;
  • Relevant post-secondary degree or diploma;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Exceptional project management skills;
  • Mature, flexible, well-organized individual who works well with staff and volunteers;
  • Ambitious and enjoys building relationships in the community;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including an excellent telephone manner;
  • Excellent time management and planning abilities;
  • Ability to thrive in a team environment and be self-motivated;
  • Strong computer skills and proficient with all Microsoft office applications;
  • Demonstrated database proficiency required, experience with Raiser’s Edge and Zeffy or other on-line fundraising systems considered an asset;
  • Experience in email marketing platforms, such as MailChimp, considered an asset, specifically managing subscriber segmentation and building campaigns;
  • Valid Alberta Driver’s License;
  • Police and vulnerable sectors check required (new or done within the last three months);
  • Ability to lift 20-30 lbs; and
  • Occasional evening and weekend work required.

Industry Knowledge

  • Knowledgeable and stays current with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and Service Alberta regulations and guidelines regarding fundraising in Canada and specifically, Alberta;
  • Knowledgeable and stays current with Alberta Gaming & Liquor Commission (AGLC) legislation, regulation and policy related to charitable groups;
  • Ensure that all Kids Cancer Care fund development activities, for both staff and volunteer participants, are fully compliant with both the AFP Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice and the Imagine Canada’s Code of Ethical Conduct; and
  • Stay well-informed of news, activities and trends in the non-profit sector.
