Responsibilities

The Director of Development will execute the strategy for successfully identifying, cultivating and soliciting a pipeline of prospective donors in alignment with Lethbridge College’s priorities and strategic goals. The Director will oversee the stewardship of all donors, including major gifts and planned initiatives, annual giving, endowed funds, annual reporting, naming opportunities, events and thank you letters. Reporting to the Vice President of Research and Partnerships (VPRP) and working with the Director of LC Extension and Director of Applied Research Operations, the Director of Development is part of the Research and Partnerships leadership team. The Director supervises the team’s staff and provides coaching, feedback, and growth opportunities, including professional development and performance management. As a member of the College Leadership Council (CLC), the Director communicates, collaborates, identifies, and supports Lethbridge College initiatives and direct fundraising initiatives. The Director will monitor the implementation of college policies of naming rights, gift acceptance, gift processing, fund management, and sharing of personal information. The Director will work with the Director of Finance to ensure compliance with CRA guidelines and regulations. The ideal incumbent will be able to design and implement a centre-wide service model and sustainability plan that aligns with the strategy and goals of Lethbridge College. This includes representing the centre on appropriate boards, committees and working groups at various levels, internal and external to the institution.

Job Duties

Leadership in Development
• Engages in excellent stewardship practices ensuring exceptional donor and stakeholder experiences resulting in meaningful and impactful relationships.
• Develops and implements appropriate strategies, activities, and documentation to identify, establish and foster relationships with potential donors and corporate sponsors.
• Builds strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to align donations with college needs.
• Build relationships with current donors and steward relationships that will benefit the College, its students, and its employees.
• Actively identifies and solicits major gifts and sponsorships from the business community, industry, foundations, governments, and organizations through developing strategic partnerships and recognition programs.
• Leads or facilitates the development of proposals, mini-campaigns and rationales for funding activities
• Sets annual goals, objectives, funding priorities, fundraising targets and benchmarks in collaboration with VPRP
• Develops transparent reporting, tracking, and management to evaluate fundraising program effectiveness and creates appropriate dissemination processes, practices, procedures, and mechanisms.
• Develops a donor stewardship strategy and oversees all aspects of the donor cycle.
• Works in close collaboration with the academic division to utilize, strengthen and coordinate the resources of the academic departments in maximizing fundraising potential.
• Supports the VPRP and VPRP Council in planning strategic business development for the division

Leadership in Human Resource Management:
• Embraces best practices aligned with Equity, Diversity and Inclusion initiatives.
• Facilitates healthy, productive work environments across the teams in the centre.
• Coaches, mentors, and guides direct reports to build leadership capacity within the team.
• Develops and supports resource management skills of managers and supervisors.
• Engages and empowers staff with clear and explicit directives to try new approaches and practices to improve services and create efficiencies.
• Facilitates goal setting and performance management
• Supports the VPRP in hiring and onboarding processes, including recruitment, selection and orientation and succession planning
• Mediates interpersonal conflicts and liaises with Human Resources

Leadership in Financial Management:
• Plans and administers budgets across the centre related to operations
• Supports the VPRP in the budget planning cycle for the division
• Develops and leads collaborative and innovative funding approaches
• Develops and maintains a sustainability plan
• Leads financial management
• Has signing authority for the centre as the CLC member
• Ensure the appropriate spending of funds donated through sponsorships, donors, or grants and oversees applicable reporting of the impact of the spend.

Required Qualifications:

• Minimum of five (5) years of diverse fundraising experience at a senior management level in a large publicly funded organization is required.
• A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized educational institution.
• Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) certification is desirable.
• Project Management Certification or experience in project management from the initial planning to project evaluation is desirable.
• Experience working in and leading diverse teams where empowerment, support, communication and inclusion are integral values.
• Experience with strategic planning, planning and mobilizing fundraising campaigns, including annual giving, major gifts, endowments, planned giving and significant capital campaigns.
• Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and skills in the management and stewardship of gifts donated for charitable purposes.
• Demonstrated knowledge of financial management, CRA charitable regulations, legislation, and records management policies, regulations, and procedures, as well as emerging trends and best practices.
• Strong negotiation skills to develop working relationships and ensure accountability where necessary.
• Expertise in assessing potential donors’ needs and internal resources’ capabilities to support initiatives effectively.
• Experience establishing and managing advisory boards and other groups at provincial and national levels.
• Demonstrated ability to think creatively and develop innovative solutions to complex problems
• Sales Force or Raiser’s Edge database experience is highly desirable, as is the ability to use various publishing and reporting tools. Advanced knowledge of MS Office 365 is desirable.
